Media release: Clayton Utz advises Asahi Shokuhin Co., Ltd. on its first acquisition in Australia
Clayton Utz has advised Japanese food wholesaler Asahi Shokuhin Co., Ltd. (Asahi) on its acquisition of a majority stake in The Fish Factory Australia Pty Ltd (Fish Factory), a Brisbane-based seafood wholesaler. The acquisition marks Asahi’s entry into the Australian market.
Asahi acquired 80% of the shares in Fish Factory. In this cross-jurisdiction transaction, Clayton Utz advised Asahi alongside its Japanese legal counsel Anderson Mori & Tomotsune (AMT).
The transaction is a sign of strong interest from mid-market Japanese companies seeking growth and investment opportunities overseas, driven by a shrinking domestic market and Clayton Utz’s specialist Japan practice has been advising on many of these investments.
Partner Hiroyuki Kano led the Clayton Utz team alongside Special Counsel Shigeki Yamaura and Overseas Qualified Practitioner Hiroyuki Kotaki.
Commenting on the transaction, Hiroyuki Kano said:
It was a pleasure to work with Asahi on its expansion into Australia. This was a significant and strategic transaction for the organisation and we’re pleased to contribute to its success. We look forward to continuing to support Asahi’s growth.
