Clayton Utz has supported pro bono client Children's Cancer Institute with the negotiation of and entry into an agreement for lease with UNSW Sydney for part of the new Minderoo Children's Comprehensive Cancer Centre (MCCCC).

The Centre will be the first of its kind in Australia, bringing together Children’s Cancer Institute, Kids Cancer Centre (part of the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network) and University of New South Wales in a formal collaboration and co-located in one space. The MCCCC will be a fully integrated comprehensive cancer centre, combining world-leading clinical care with ground-breaking research and education, to change the face of paediatric cancer and ultimately, put an end to childhood cancer.

The MCCCC will be housed within Stage 1 of the new Sydney Children's Hospital in Randwick and the adjacent UNSW Health Translation Hub (UNSW HTH).

The agreement, supported by Clayton Utz, provides for the delivery and lease to Children's Cancer Institute of the MCCCC’s dry labs, office and meeting spaces within the UNSW HTH.

Once both buildings are completed, the MCCCC will include new world-class facilities, including wet and dry laboratories, education, training and research spaces, new oncology inpatient units, patient and family-focused retreat areas and a new day oncology centre.

As part of the deal, UNSW Sydney is providing a $32 million in-kind contribution to the MCCCC. The wider project is being delivered by Health Infrastructure in partnership with the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, Children’s Cancer Institute and UNSW Sydney, with John Holland as the principal contractor.

The Clayton Utz team was led by Partner Eva Oraham and Special Counsels Ben Pierce and Angus Roy.

Commenting on the transaction, Eva Oraham said:

It was a privilege to work with the team at CCIA on this vital project. Every child deserves the best that life has to offer, including access to world class facilities and amenities when the unthinkable happens. This is a small way our team can help to make a difference.
