Overview

Recent data breaches involving personal information have been headline news.  These cases have highlighted privacy as a critical governance and compliance risk issue across public and private sectors. While it has been recognised for decades that privacy breaches can cause significant adverse outcomes for organisations, it has taken the events of 2022 to fully appreciate the scale of the adverse impacts of a privacy breach.

Organisations will almost inevitably need to deal with some form of data breach from time to time.  They are “crisis” situations, and can be extremely stressful for officers and reputationally damaging for agencies.

The Queensland Government has flagged that a mandatory data breach notification scheme will soon be established. So what will the scheme involve? How can you prepare for it? What do you do when the worst happens?
